Her predecessor was a church from the seventh century, founded by the Saxon King Ina. You can reach there by the Buses from Wells. Famous is the cathedral of Wells for its magnificent west front, where there are more than 300 statues and stone carvings, for the scissor arches of the nave and one of the oldest working mechanical clocks, which is dated in 1390. The sources, who gave the town its name “Wells”, are now on the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace, which continues to act as a seat of the Bishops of Bath and Wells.
