Programming is a very large area. There are many programming languages, platforms and development kits. How does one decide on what is the best programming language for them to learn as an intorduction to programming.

The best advice I can give is : you need to consider what types of software you envision building. Will you be building web sites, will you be building windows applications, will you be building Mac or mobile applications. Introcuction programming languages should shield all the complexeties of the operating system etc and allow you to understand the language of computers i.e loops, condisitons, constructs, data declarations etc.
