Hiring an accountant may be the smartest thing I have ever done. Years ago, I used to prepare my own tax returns. When I did that it seemed I was audited every two or three years. Six years ago, I decided to hire a tax preparer and since then I haven’t been audited once. I’m not sure if they tend to audit more individually prepared returns than professionally prepared ones or if it was just my bad luck. I can definitely say I no longer dread tax time as much as I used to. Hiring a professional has definitely take a load off of my shoulders.
